Rabbi at Synod

rav Shear-Yeashu Cohen in the Vatican

"My presence at the Synod is a signal of hope and a message of love, coexistence and peace for our generation and for the generations to come''.

These are the historic words that the chief rabbi of Haifa, rav Shear-Yashuv Cohen, pronounced on 6 October 2008, before the Catholic bishops and cardinals have come from all over the world: rav Cohen was the first jew in history to have spoken the Holy Scriptures before the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican.

This unique event in history, brings another stone in the construction of the dialogue between Jews and Christians.

''I feel deeply that being here in front of you is very significant, "said the rabbi in the synodal assembly “It is a privilege and an honour to be the first rabbi who is invited to speak to a Synod, representing the Jewish faith and the chief rabbi of Israel''.

We appreciate what this gesture means” added RAV Cohen, after “the long, hard and painful history of the relationship between our people, our faith and the Catholic Church, its leaders and its faithful - a history of blood and tears''.

Rav Shear Yshuv Cohen on this occasion expressed "deep shock" for "the terrible words of the Iranian president, in his speech last month at the UN General Assembly. The false and malicious accusations, threats and anti-Semitic incitement, we have reported to a painful memory of the tragedy of our people - the victims of the Holocaust, which we hope and pray it does not happen again. We hope - added the rabbi addressing the Synod of Bishops - to have your help of religious leaders, as well as help the free world, to protect, defend and save Israel, the one and only sovereign state of the 'People of the Book' in the hands of its enemies. "

In 2004, the artist Shazarahel produces a picture that depicts the Rabbi Cohen with a Sufi immam and a Catholic cardinal.

Made four years before this historic event, the subject of this picture seems almost prophetic and premonitory.

In this context, the artist combines the three monotheistic religions - that coexist within the walls of Old Jerusalem - the three pillars of the sephirotic tree, keter, hessed and din, developing the thought of Rav Elia Benamozeg and Rav Eliahu Munk.
